Performing minor surgery in NHS Primary Care?
NHS Primary Care Practitioners wishing to perform (and get paid for) surgical procedures under the Minor Surgery Directly Enhanced Service (“the Minor Surgery DES”) must submit evidence of appropriate ongoing training, including confirmation that a Direct Observation of Procedural Skills (DOPS) Assessment has taken place.
As part of this course, you will be prompted to upload photos of your incisions, excisions & sutures, which will be assessed by our tutor team.
This DOPS Assessment will be noted on your Certificate of Completion. This can then be submitted to your local/regional commissioners, so that you can remain accredited to perform these procedures under the Minor Surgery DES.
It may be possible that your local commissioners mandate ‘in-person’ training/updates for Minor Surgery. To date thousands of practitioners have completed the minor surgery distance course we have never encountered this, however, if there is any uncertainly then we’d advise you to check with your commissioner prior to booking.
This training usually needs to be renewed every 2-3 years.

The Minor Surgery Distance Course is suitable for all skills levels, although if you haven’t performed any of these skills before then you may prefer to attend our in-person Minor Surgery Course instead.
If you are a novice or beginner, then we’ll train you to be great at Minor Surgery. If you’re already an expert, then you’ll receive an excellent refresher and skills update.
The Minor Surgery Course is designed with GPs, Hospital Doctors, Nurse Practitioners, Paramedics & Community Practitioners in mind, but is suitable for any healthcare practitioner looking to develop their surgical skillset.
Allied Health Professionals and non-independent practitioners should confirm the education requirements with their Professional & Membership Bodies prior to practicing minor surgery independently. Some professions may require higher education / a diploma, which this course will not provide.

You will be shipped all training materials received on our in-person course, to practice and learn in your own time and your own pace.
Having watched our close-up tutorial videos, you will be prompted to upload photos of your complete incisions, excisions & various sutures, for evaluation and feedback by the tutor team. It takes our tutors 5-10 working days to review your assignments.
The Course is concluded with an online MCQ which, in conjunction with the photo assessments, we will issue a Certificate of Completion noting that a DOPS has taken place.

This minor surgery course is recommended by the largest Primary Care educational provider in the UK, NB Medical Education, who share our passion for equipping healthcare professionals with the latest skills, knowledge and techniques.
Will this count towards my CPD?
Yes! Completion of the Minor Surgery Distance Course will gain you 7 CPD Hours / Credits, which will be displayed on your Certificate of Completion.
Will this course allow me to practice independently?
The Minor Surgery Distance Course will cover all the practical elements, techniques and guidance required to perform Minor Surgery. However, like most CPD Courses (including our in-person courses), it is not a postgraduate qualification or diploma level course, and does not on its own qualify healthcare professionals to practice minor surgery independently afterwards.
The training requirements to practice minor surgery independently vary both between and within professions; some require higher education (i.e. a diploma), some require CPD training such this course, followed by employer competency based assessment/skills sign-off, and some (generally independent practitioners & Doctors) require our training, supported by local mentorship, reflective practice, audit and appraisal.
If you are not a prescriber, you will also need arrangements for the local anaesthetic to be prescribed prior to treatment. This would need to be under a Patient Group Directive or Patient Specific Direction.
We have Doctors, Nurses, Paramedics, and other NMC/HCPC professions completing this course, either to gain an excellent foundation in Minor Surgery, or as a CPD refresher/up-skill for existing practitioners. We use simulation models and skin rather than real patients, and so there are no specific eligibility criteria for attending the course.
How can my employer pay for me?
The fastest way to secure your minor surgery course place is to use a credit/debit card to purchase your course via our website. You could either pay yourself and claim back from your employer, or they could make the purchase on your behalf using a company credit card.
If your employer wishes to make payment via bank transfer, and requires an invoice from us, then please add the desired course to your cart, and select the ‘Pay By Invoice‘ option at the checkout page.
Instead of charging you, we will generate and send you an invoice for your training place, which you must then sent to your employer for payment.
At checkout please ensure you submit the correct Billing Details for your employer. Please also ensure you submit any Purchase Order Number, if provided to you by your employer. Purchase Order Numbers are often required by large NHS Organisations.
We will complete your order and send your login instructions once funds have cleared in our account.
