The Minor Surgery Course is led by highly experienced GPs and Primary Care surgeons, ensuring that a community focus and context is maintained throughout. They are supported by plastic, orthopaedic and dermatological surgeons, ensuring we always teach the most recent, relevant, and evidence based practices.

The Minor Surgery Course begins with a series of punchy and entertaining lectures, where we cover practical tips, useful advice, and all the key safety information you need. This is followed by live demonstrations and supervised hands on simulated practice for the majority of the 2 Days.

Completion of this Minor Surgery Course will:

– Teach you how to setup a safe, cost-effective and modern minor surgery service

– Give you the ability to accurately diagnose and treat a range of skin lesions and conditions

– Train you when to choose and how to perform correct excision methods

– Equip you with a range of simple and advanced wound closure techniques in a simulated environment

– Give you the confidence to begin operating

NHS Primary Care Practitioners wishing to perform (and get paid for) surgical procedures under the Minor Surgery Directly Enhanced Service  (“the Minor Surgery DES”) must submit evidence of appropriate ongoing training, including confirmation that a Direct Observation of Procedural Skills (DOPS) Assessment has taken place in a simulated environment.

The course includes a DOPS Assessment, which will be noted on your Certificate of Completion. This can then be submitted to your local/regional commissioners,  so that you can remain accredited to perform these procedures under the Minor Surgery DES. This training usually needs to be renewed every 2-3 years.

Before the course you will receive online access to our highly regarded Minor Surgery Resource Area, which includes:

 – Our up to date and fully referenced Minor Surgery Handbook

– Our suite of close up demonstration videos, including in-vivo guides and walkthroughs

Consent Forms & Guidelines

Patient Information Videos (unbranded and ready to use in your own practice)

Standard Operating Procedures

On the day of the course you’ll receive your personal Minor Surgery Pack, which includes all the surgical instruments, sutures, and various simulation training tissue (skin, pigmented lesions, lipoma, cyst & abscess) you’ll need for the 2 days.

We strive to offer excellent post-course support, and our friendly tutor team remain available for any post-course questions or queries.

Yes! Attendance of the 2 Day Minor Surgery Course will gain you 12 CPD Hours / Credits, which will be displayed on your Certificate of Completion.

The Minor Surgery Course covers all the practical techniques and guidance needed to perform minor surgery in a simulated environment. However, like most CPD courses, it is not a postgraduate qualification or diploma, and does not in isolation qualify healthcare professionals to practise minor surgery independently.

The requirements for practising minor surgery independently can vary between and within professions. For some, it may require a higher education qualification (such as a diploma). For others, it may involve CPD training like this course, followed by an employer’s competency-based assessment and sign-off. In certain cases, particularly for independent practitioners and doctors, this training should be complemented by local mentorship, reflective practice, audit, and appraisal.

If you are not a prescriber, you will also need arrangements in place for local anaesthetic prescriptions under a Patient Group Directive (PGD) or Patient Specific Direction (PSD) prior to any treatment.

This course is attended by doctors, nurses, paramedics, and other NMC/HCPC registered professionals, either to gain a solid foundation in minor surgery or as a CPD refresher or skills enhancement. As the course uses simulation models and synthetic skin instead of real patients, there are no specific eligibility criteria for attending.

The course includes formative assessments, designed to support ongoing learning and skill development rather than serve as a final, pass/fail judgement of competence.

Yes! We are always delighted to have trainees, medical students, FYs & STs attending our Minor Surgery Course. You’ll find it an excellent introduction to these skills.
